Based on the newbie guide contributed by Floyd-O-Matic, El Cid and Morbius with modificattions by boevoipes.

Starting Up

When you first join up with WarOnline the first thing you should probably do is look over the Online Manual and the Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ). Once you think you have gotten the hang of the rules join one of the beginner games to get a feel for how to play the game. The beginner games allow you to practice without the worry that losing a game will effect your level or 'ranking'. The games start when more than half the available slots have been filled by players.

Once you have jumped into a specific game, you will notice that you have a castle with two barracks and four armies which you have chosen before entering that game. Choosing the combination of the starting four armies is up to you, however experience has shown that it is better to start with a few commandeer armies and a few scouts, maybe 2 commandeers and 2 scouts or 3 commandeers and 1 scout. You will need enough commandeers to take over the nearby resource buildings and to construct new buildings such as the Military Academy and the Training Guild. Scouts are efficient at collecting nearby resources, make sure you have enough of them travelling around and attacking all the resource piles(eg. Gems, Gold Ore etc..) you can see. This will give you the extra resources you will need to construct new buildings and deploy more troops faster.

Armies

When you move your mouse over your troops you will see a pop-up that gives you information about them, most notably action points, movement points and population. Your troops ability to move is directly related to their movement points. This mirrors reality where it is difficult to get tired people to march over mountains and such. The higher you keep your action points, the more damage you can do when attacking or attacked(or build and take-over for commandeers), so remember to treat your troops with care. When your troops battle opposition, there is a certain order of dominance (or as El Cid says "We have a ROCK PAPER SCISSORS thing.", which pretty much sums it up).

For example:

Spearmen(Rock) beat Scouts(Scissors)
Scouts(Scissors) beat Swordsmen(Paper)
Swordsmen(Paper) beat Spearmen(Rock)

Archers can pick off anybody, with their six square range, but if the enemy gets next to them, any one of the the above can beat the Archers. Morbius also spoke of attack bonuses when you are using more seasoned troops that offset the normal "rock paper Scissors" thing.

Technologies&Upgrades

Technologies have become a very important part of the game. Techs and Upgrades enable you to improve your kingdom in different areas such as Commerce and Military.

The first technology you should research is 'Taxes', this will boost your gold income which will come handy as most players experience a gold shortage throughout the game. After this research 'Military' in order to be able to construct a Military Academy and afterwards a Training Guild. These two buildings are important as they enable you to research more advanced military techs-vital for your creation of a successful war machine. When you have some extra resources and time, research 'Commerce' it will allow you to build a marketplace(enables trade of resources) and research the techs that come with it, notably 'Tax Reform' which again increases your gold income.

The most advanced armies on the battlefields of WON are likely to consist of a mix of Heavy Cavalry(strongest unit around), Knights(strong melee unit against which armies do not retaliate) and Marksmen(a strong ranged unit with no 'range penalties'). To recruit these troops you will need to construct a Military Academy and a Training Guild and then first research 'Advanced Training' after which 'Expert Melee'(Heavy Cavalry&Knights) and 'Advanced Archery'--->'Expert Archery'(Marksmen).

At the time this was written WarOnline.Net has undergone a MAJOR update. The above is a small summary of the basic things learned about the new game so far. Anything you have not learned from this guide, the Online Manual or the FAQ you will probably learn by playing and experimenting with the game yourself. Also don't forget to visit the WON forums(and the WARonliner) as they can be a good source of answers to your questions.
